Christmas is Joy

Dear Families,

Coming up with something meaningful to say in this letter is easier some weeks than others.  In bemoaning this to the sixth grade class, they took it upon themselves to help me with this week’s theme.  Naturally, they wanted the focus to be Christmas and one suggested the following quote from the Gospel of St. Luke:

The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.  The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”

As always, kids have a way of pointing you to what is most important.  At the heart of this busy season is good news and great joy for all people, the happiness of God coming to us in the form of a newborn.  There is a heartwarming element to this aspect of our faith because, after all, who doesn’t love a new baby?  It seems very intentional that salvation came to us in a manner which we could not possibly resist.

Pope Francis says, “Christmas is joy.”  The joy of Christmas has been alive and well here at school this week with our annual Christmas Lessons and Carols, Santa’s Workshop, students visiting nursing homes to sing Christmas carols, various Christmas parties, and the overall excitement of the kids.  All of us here at Mount Royal wish you and your family all of the hope and peace that comes with this holy season.

Sincerely,

Katie Richardson
