Energy Program

Overview

It used to be that all aspects of residential energy service were controlled by incumbent monopolies.

But as customer demand for a choice and opportunity grew, laws were introduced that broke up the outdated system, allowing competition and giving customers the right to choose their energy provider.

In 1996, New York and California were first to set the pace and open deregulated markets to business and consumers. The next year, Pennsylvania and Illinois make the switch. Soon they are joined by Massachusetts (1998), Maryland and New Jersey (1999), Connecticut (2000), Washington D.C. (2001) and Texas (2002).

What exactly is deregulation? Check out this entertaining and informative video for the basics and history of energy deregulation in the United States.

Benefits for you if you switch your electricity supplier to AMBIT:

  • You might save on the electric supply portion of your electric bill*.

  • You help the school.

Benefits for the school if you switch your electricity supplier to AMBIT:

  • A small portion of the “Power Supply” portion of your electric bill will go to the school every month.

What are the costs of switching?

  • There are no costs for switching your electricity supplier.

If I switch, will I have to pay 2 electric bills?

  • No. You will continue to receive one bill from your current electric company. Your electric company will forward the electricity supply portion of your bill to AMBIT.

If there is a power outage, who do I contact?

  • You will continue to contact your electric company as they will continue to provide the “delivery” of electricity.

If I am not happy with AMBIT, can I switch back? Is there a cost?

  • You can switch back to your current electricity supplier, or any other electricity supplier, at no cost.

How long does it take for the switch to become effective?

  • It normally takes one billing cycle (one month) for the switch "in" to become effective and one billing cycle (one month) if you ever decide to switch out. You will continue to be an AMBIT customer until the switch "out" is effective.

What types of programs does AMBIT offer?

  • Depending on your location, AMBIT offers: variable (subject to change every month), 3, 6, and 12 month fixed contracts (the price remains the same throughout the term of the contract) as well as energy derived from renewable sources.

I receive energy assistance from the state as a discount on my bill. Can I still switch to AMBIT?

  • Yes you may. However, the discount for energy assistance would be lost. Make sure that the discount you would get by switching to AMBIT (if any) is larger than the discount you currently receive.

How do I find out how much I am paying my current electricity supplier?

  • Under the “Supplier Charges” of your bill you will see your usage (kWh) and the rate you are being charged in cents per kWh. This is the rate you should use to compare with AMBIT’s rates.

    • In the Eversource sample bill you will find the generation price highlighted in orange in the second page of the statement.
    • In the New Hampshire Electric Coop sample bill you will find the generation price highlighted in orange in the first page of the statement.
